A public appeal to our political leaders to stamp out racism in Australia

公开呼吁我们的政治领导人消除澳洲的种族主义

According to the Australian Human Rights commission, one in four people who lodged racial-discrimination complaints in the past two months say they were targeted due to COVID-19.  

据澳洲人权委员会（Australian Human Rights commission）介绍，在过去的两个月中，每4位提出种族歧视投诉的人中，就有1人表示是因为新型冠状病毒疫情而成为目标。

Despite CCCA’s exposures in the media calling our political leadership to stamp out racism of any form in Australia, even though we have some positive responses from our Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Minister Tudge and Shadow Minister Giles, & the Human Rights Commission Chin Tan, the incidence of racists taunts and tirades continue unabated.

尽管CCCA在媒体上呼吁我们的政客领导人消除澳洲任何形式的种族主义，且也收到了一些来自总理、反对党领导人、部长塔奇（Tudge）、影子部长吉尔斯（Giles）以及人权委员会Chin Tan的积极回应，但种族主义者嘲讽和戏弄事件的发生率仍在持续上升。

Overseas English language newspapers, the Strait Times (Singapore) and South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) have reported racists incidence in Australia and together they gave the Asian countries the impression/perception that Australia is a white supremist/racist country.  How can Australia win the hearts and minds of Asia to become an influential leader in the Asia Pacific when this adverse publicity destroys Australian’s credibility as a fair go nation?

海外英文版报纸《海峡时报》（新加坡）与《南华早报》（香港）都曾报道过澳洲的种族歧视事件，两份报纸加在一起给人一种亚洲国家澳洲是白人至上/种族主义国家的印象/感觉。当这种不利的宣传破坏了澳洲作为一个公平国家的信誉时，澳洲如何赢得亚洲人的人心，成为亚太地区有影响力的领导者？

Most recent incidence of racist vandalism was reported in the ABC.net (14Ap2020) where a Nazi flag attached to two Chinese flags was left to fly above the Victorian town of Kyabram for two days after being tied to a Telstra tower in the centre of town.  This report included a photo of a racist signage on a wall “Shame …. China, Go Home Yellow Dog” which also appeared on a building site at Box Hill in Victoria where we have a large Chinese Australians population.

大部分最近发生的种族主义破坏事件是由澳广网（ABC）报道的。据报道，一个纳粹的旗帜曾被与两个中国国旗捆绑在一个城中心的澳洲电讯（Telstra）信号塔上，在维州小镇基布拉姆（Kyabram）的上空飘扬了两天。这篇报道还刊登了一张照片，上面是一堵墙上写有“耻辱……中国，回家黄狗”等种族主义的标语。这同样出现在维州的一个建筑工地上，那里有大量的澳籍华人聚集。

The APAC News captured the real sentiments of Chinese Australians and said that regardless of subjective judgement on the conduct of the media in the current COVID-19 crisis, “The overwhelming majority of Chinese Australians feel they have been racially demonised in the Australian media throughout this crisis” and including many other Asian  Australians.

亚太新闻（APAC News）报道了澳籍华人的真实情绪，报道称不考虑在当前新型冠状病毒疫情（COVID-19）危机中对媒体行为的主观判断，“绝大多数澳籍华人认为，在这场危机中，他们在澳洲媒体上被种族妖魔化”，这也是很多其他澳籍亚裔的想法。

Hence, in this commentary, we foreshadowed a community petition to the Leaders of the governments and oppositions raising outstanding issues and making a plea for our leaders to act accordingly and not just pay lip service to our requests.

因此，在这份评论报道中，我们向政府和反对派领导人提出社区请愿，提出一些悬而未决的问题，并呼吁我们的领导人采取相应行动，而不仅仅是对我们的要求进行口头表达。

The questions asked by APAC News to the government on this matter for action, is supported by community leaders listed below.

1. Would you agree?  And are there steps the government would consider taking to request mainstream media outlets to take a more measured approach in their reporting when it comes to China and Chinese Australians?

2. Are there instances where senior government members or the National Cabinet has proactively taken steps to address the issues of media bias against Chinese Australians?

3. Are you aware that Assist Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Jason Wood MP posted a story on his Facebook page on 1 March 2020 under the #WARNING, in which he attacked certain Asian people as being “disgusting?”

4. All this time, was any consideration given to a joint statement from the Chinese Community council of Australia, the National Sikh Council of Australia and the Multicultural Communities Council of NSW calling for Mr Wood’s resignation, or termination from Assistant Ministry?

4. 一直以来，是否考虑过澳洲华人社区理事会（Chinese Community council of Australia）、澳洲锡克教全国委员会（National Sikh Council of Australia）和新州多元文化社区理事会（Multicultural Communities Council of NSW）的联合声明，要求伍德先生辞职或辞去助理大臣一职？

5. Are you aware that subsequent Facebook post from Mr Wood singling out Chinese community members have since been posted gathering more than 500 comments and overwhelmingly racist in nature? Are you aware of such post appearing as recently as three days ago?

The above outstanding issues form the basis of our submission to the political leaders to take action and implement steps to eradicate racism in Australia and restore community harmony and international reputation of Australia.

以上未解决的问题构成了我们提交情愿的基础，希望政治领导人采取行动，逐步消除澳洲种族主义并恢复澳洲社区和谐的国际声誉。

We appreciate that Prime Minister Scott Morrison  strongly condemned racism against Asian / Chinese Australians again on 14/04/2020.

我们非常感谢莫里森总理在2020年4月14日强烈谴责针对澳籍亚裔/华裔的种族歧视。

“I’m massively disappointed because it’s just so wrong,” he told SBS News.

“It was the amazing compliance and cooperation and diligence and patience shown by the Chinese Australian community that saved Australian lives… They led the way and the broader community is now following.

“我非常失望，因为这是非常错误的。”莫里森在接受SBS新闻采访时表示。“正是澳洲华人社区表现出的惊人的合规、合作、勤奋和耐心拯救了澳人的生命……他们起到了带头作用，更多的社区也正在追随。”

We thank our Prime Minister and Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews for leading the way. However we believe, more can be done by other Ministers, shadow Ministers, politicians and public figures  in our mainstream media and public places.

我们感谢总理以及维州州长安德鲁（Daniel Andrews）起到的带头作用。但我们相信其他部长、影子部长、政客以及公共人物在我们的主流媒体和公共场所还可以做得更多。
